🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬❤️ Meet Sisi Abah, she's the woman who made ANKARA CLOTHES so famous
Sisi Abah, born Princess Abah Folawiyo on July 22, 1942, in Ghana, grew up in a family of dressmakers. From a young age, she loved sewing and designing clothes. In 1963, she won a big fashion award in Ghana and got a scholarship to study fashion in London.
There, she trained with top designers before returning to West Africa with big dreams.
In 1978, she started her fashion brand called Labanella Creations. At that time, most rich people preferred clothes made with foreign fabrics, but Sisi Abah proudly used Ankara and other African materials. She showed that local fabrics could be beautiful and stylish too.
Her fashion show, “Labanella Goes Ecowest,” toured West Africa in 1986 and gained attention from around the world. Long before fashion shows became common in Lagos, she had already made Nigeria known for great style.
Sisi Abah’s clothes appeared in big magazines and on runways, and she dressed many of Nigeria’s most important women. She also helped young designers grow by supporting the Fashion Designers Association of Nigeria (FADAN) as a mentor and life patron.
More than just a fashion designer, Sisi Abah became a symbol of grace, beauty, and African pride. Even in her 80s, she still sews for close friends and shows up at events wearing elegant Ankara outfits.
Her story proves that true style doesn’t have to come from outside Nigeria it can come from our own rich culture and creativity.
