*Subject: Petition Against the Promotion of Ritual Practices Through Yoruba Films on DStv and Other Platforms*
Dear Sir/Madam,
On behalf of the NAUIYO Foundation for Youths, a legally registered organization (Foundation) based in Ilaje, Ondo State, committed to protecting and empowering the youth against violence, cybercrime, and destructive cultural influences, we hereby submit this petition against the ongoing broadcast and promotion of Yoruba-language films containing graphic and glorified ritual content.
These films, frequently aired on DStv and other platforms, promote acts such as human sacrifice, fetishism, spiritual killings, and money rituals often portrayed as paths to wealth, success, and influence. Such repeated exposure is not only morally damaging but has had an observable effect on the mindset of young people, particularly in the South West and South South regions, where real-life ritual killings linked to 'Yahoo Plus' and similar practices have tragically occurred.
Specific Concerns:
1. Promotion of Ritual Killing and Fetishism:
Several movies depict the use of human body parts for wealth rituals, normalizing and encouraging such acts among vulnerable viewers.
2. Lack of Proper Content Classification:
Many of these films are aired during unrestricted hours without age-appropriate ratings, violating the NBC Broadcasting Code and NFVCB standards.
3. Cultural Misrepresentation:
These portrayals damage the image of Yoruba culture, which is rich in values, intelligence, and resilience, not bloodshed and occultism.
4. Influence on Criminal Behaviour:
The surge in ritual-related killings among youth can no longer be disconnected from these misleading visual narratives.
Our Demands:
We respectfully request that:
1. NBC urgently investigate DStv and similar media outlets for possible violations of content guidelines.
2. NFVCB audit and reclassify or ban all films that promote rituals or similar destructive themes.
3. MultiChoice Nigeria (DStv) immediately suspends the broadcast of such films pending review and reclassification.
4. A national dialogue be initiated between filmmakers, broadcasters, and cultural bodies to establish responsible storytelling boundaries.
While we recognize and respect creative expression and the role of films in cultural storytelling, this should not come at the expense of national security, public morals, and youth welfare. We believe this petition serves not only as a civic responsibility but as a call to preserve the future of Nigerian youth from misleading and harmful content.
We look forward to your swift and decisive action, failure to this shall attract legal proceedings to prohibit such content nationwide and cause of damages at the competent court of justice.
Yours in nation-building,
Prince Emorioloye Owolemi
